Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most famous and ecologically diverse national park, located in the western region of the country, stretching across the districts of Kasese, Rubirizi, and Kamwenge. Covering over 1,978 square kilometers, the park is celebrated for its stunning and varied landscapes, which include savannah plains, tropical forests, volcanic craters, wetlands, lakes, and the winding Kazinga Channel, one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich waterways.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. On the savannahs and open plains, visitors can spot lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, and waterbuck, while the wetlands and Kazinga Channel are populated by large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a spectacular variety of bird species—over 600 species have been recorded here. The park also shelters primates including chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys, particularly in the Kyambura Gorge and the Ishasha sector, which is famous for its tree-climbing lions.

Visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park can enjoy a wide range of safari experiences. Game drives across the savannah and crater areas provide close encounters with large mammals, while boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel offer unmatched opportunities for wildlife photography and bird watching. Guided forest walks, chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge, and visits to the crater lakes give travelers a more intimate connection with the park’s natural beauty. Cultural experiences with local communities add an enriching dimension, allowing visitors to learn about traditional practices and life in the shadow of this iconic park.

With its combination of breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and diverse ecosystems, Queen Elizabeth National Park remains a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a full East African safari experience in Uganda. Its accessibility, range of activities, and the sheer richness of its wildlife make it a highlight for both first-time visitors and seasoned safari enthusiasts.
