The Great Wildebeest Migration – Nature’s Greatest Show
One of the most awe-inspiring natural events in the world, the Great Wildebeest Migration is an annual journey undertaken by over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by thousands of zebras and gazelles. This dramatic migration spans across the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, covering nearly 1,800 miles in search of fresh grazing lands and water sources.
The Migration Route
Calving Season (January – March) – Southern Serengeti, Tanzania
The migration begins in the nutrient-rich plains of the southern Serengeti, where thousands of wildebeest give birth to their young. This is a prime time for predator action, as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas take advantage of prey abundance.

Moving North (April – June) – Central Serengeti and Grumeti River
As the rainy season ends, the herds start their journey northward, encountering the first major obstacle—the Grumeti River. Here, crocodiles lie in wait, leading to dramatic river crossings.
Explore the Grumeti River crossings.
The Mara River Crossings (July – September) – Northern Serengeti & Maasai Mara
Perhaps the most iconic phase of the migration, the Mara River crossings are both breathtaking and perilous. Thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters, battling strong currents and predators on the other side.

The Return Journey (October – December) – Maasai Mara to Serengeti
After months in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, the herds begin their journey back south as the rains return to the Serengeti. This cyclical movement continues as part of nature’s grand design.
Learn about the return migration.
Best Time to Witness the Migration
The migration is a year-round event, but the best times to visit depend on which part of the journey you want to witness. The river crossings (July to September) offer the most dramatic scenes, while the calving season (January to March) provides a unique opportunity to see newborn wildebeest and increased predator activity. Find the best safari season for you.
