About Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy also known Lewa down is fenced private conservancy located in the Northern part of Kenya formed in 1995. The Lewa Conservancy together with Ngare Ndare Forest covers an area of 250 square kilometers. With dramatic views of snow-capped Mt Kenya to the south, and the arid lands of Tassia and Il Ngwesi to the north, Lewa showcases a range of wild habitats from highland forests, wide open grasslands, melt-water mountain springs and acacia woodland.

Lewa Conservancy plays an important role to the communities by developing schools and offering educations programs regarding conservation.

 

Wildlife in Lewa Conservancy

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy its major priority was to protect critically endangered black rhino and Grevy zebras; due to high security and monitoring played by surveillance Lewa down staff, black rhinos have breed well over decades. The Conservancy is also home to the Big five (Lions, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo), and antelopes like eland, impalas, grant gazelles and waterbuck, beisa Oryx, reticulated giraffes, gerenuk. Other animals included hippos, Somali Ostrich, black and white colobus monkey.

 

Accessibility

Lewa Conservancy is only four hours drive from Nairobi. Lewa Downs Airstrip which is located at the conservancy also allows both private and commercial local flight from Nairobi Wilson Airstrip.
